In their latest developer diary, the TESRenewal team provided a lengthy and detailed update on their progress to bring Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion forward into the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim engine.
Still targeting a 2025 release date, the team begins the video by sounding an all-call for modding assistance. As a completely volunteer-based project, the team asks for those who are experienced in modding Skyrim to apply on their website to assist in order to get the project out as soon as possible. They are desperate for 3D modelers, but are still confident in their timeline to release as promised.
After detailing the great forests that dot the plains of Cyrodil, the team gets down to brass tacks and dives into their UI changes. They’ve completely overhauled the menus and interface in order to fit the world more, and what once were simply lists on screen are now animated menus that provide an abundance of data about your character and build choices.
Furthermore, the team provides information on how they’re updating and elevating the source material. For example, most of the Ayleid ruins that were scattered throughout the game were built from the same pieces. While each one was unique, the hallways and rooms that they were made up of quickly became familiar. The TESRenewal team has changed this so that, depending on the location, the ruins might include sections overgrown with vegetation or buried in the snow.
Additionally, the team has updated the lockpicking mechanics to represent a blend of Oblivion, Skyrim, and The Elder Scrolls Online to form something wholly new, and even provided a link to put this system in your current Skyrim game!
The video finishes out with a walkthrough of the city of Chorrol, which fans will remember fondly as the center of many thrilling and classic quests from Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
To play Skyblivion, you’ll need a legally obtained copy of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on PC. It will launch sometime in 2025. Will you be there to play this reimagined classic? Or are you looking to apply your modding talents to the TESRenewal team? Let us know in the comments below!
